Learning True Discipleship
Looking To Jesus
Philippians 2:8
Introduction: We have already discussed what is discipleship, and
the cost of discipleship. Today, we will take a look at the life of
Jesus and the example He left us.
I. Humility
A. Humility of Jesus:
1. Demonstrated in leaving heaven: Philippians 2:5-8
2. Jesus was humble in heart: Matthew 11:29, 1 Peter 2:21
3. Christ came to serve others: Matthew 20:28, John 13:1-17 (the
master became the servant)
B. We must humble:
1. Sin is a result of a lack of humility: 1 Samuel 15:17
2. We must have the humility that Jesus showed: Philippians 2:5,
Matthew 5:3
3. The Bible condemns pride: Proverbs 6:16-19, 16:18, 1 Peter
5:5-6
4. We need to be humble: Proverbs 16:19, 18:12
5. Humble yourself as the little child: Matthew
18:2-4
6. Pride and humility contrasted: Luke 18:9-14
II.
Obedience
A. Jesus was obedient in all things: Philippians
2:8, John 6:38
B. Jesus learned obedience by the things He
suffered: Hebrews 5:8
1. Is not just doing what you want: Matthew 26:39, James 2:10
2. Is not always desirable or enjoyable: 2 Timothy 4:2, 2
Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 5
3. Is not always fair: Ezekiel 18:4, Luke 23:39-41
4. May mean standing alone: John 6:26, 66, 68; Matthew 26:43
5. Involves self-denial: Matthew 26:39, 16:24,
C. We must be obedient to God: Matthew 7:21-23, Hebrews 5:9, John
3:36, 1 John 2:17
D. Nothing less than complete and total obedience
will be accepted: James 2:10, 1 Samuel 15
E. If we truly love God, we will obey Him: John
14:15, 1 John 5:2-3
F. Condemnation awaits the disobedient: 2
Thessalonians 1:8, Hebrews 4:1-11
G. Our righteousness must exceed the scribes and
Pharisees: Matthew 5:19-20
Conclusion:
In order to be a true disciple, we must follow the example of our great
King, Jesus Christ. Let us humble ourselves and obey God in every point.
