Learning True Discipleship

The Disciples Relationship to Himself

 

Introduction: As we continue our study of discipleship we’ll begin to look at the various relationships the disciple possesses. Today, we will look at the relationship a disciple as with himself.

 

I. An Athlete: The Disciple’s Commitment

A. How Jesus exemplified an athlete:

                                1. Exhibited self-control: 1 Peter 2:21-23, Matthew 26:39

                                2. Competed according to the rules: Hebrews 4:15, 1 Peter 2:22

                                3. Ran to win (kept His focus on the goal): Hebrews 12:2

                B. As an athlete, we must:

                                1. Committed To Rigorous Training: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

                                                a. We must have self-control: Galatians 5:23, 2 Peter 1:6

                                                b. Exercise towards godliness: 1 Timothy 4:7-8

                                2. Compete according to the rules: 2 Timothy 2:5                             

                                                a. God tells us how he expects us to live:

                                                b. We must live lawfully to win: Matthew 7:21-23, 2 John 9

                                                c. If we break the rules, we can be disqualified: 1 Corinthians 9:27, James 2:10

                                3. Run to win!

                                                a. You have to run!

                                                b. Run to obtain the prize: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

                                                c. Run with endurance: Hebrews 12:1-2

                                                d. Press toward the goal: Philippians 3:12-14

 

II. A Soldier: The Disciple’s Battle

                A. How Jesus exemplified a soldier: 2 Timothy 2:3-4

                                1. Endured hardship: Mathew 26:47, 56, 69-75, 27:26-31, 38-43

                                2. Was not entangled with affairs of this life: Luke 2:49, 9:58

                                3. Sought to please His Commander: John 4:34, Matthew 26:39

                B. As a good soldier, we must:

                                1. Endure Hardship: 2 Timothy 2:3, 3:12, Matthew 10:22

                                2. Not be entangled with affairs of life: 2 Timothy 2:4, Luke 8:14, 9:57-62, 1 John 2:15-17

                                3. Seek to please our commander: 2 Timothy 2:4

                                                a. Jesus is our captain: Hebrews 2:10

                                                b. Our greatest desire should be to please our captain: 2 Corinthians 5:9-10, Colossians 1:10

                                4. Obey commands:

a. We must be obedient: Matthew 7:21, Luke 6:46, Hebrews 5:8-9

b. Disobedience will be punished: 2 Thessalonians 1:8, John 3:36

                                5. Be prepared for battle: 1 Corinthians 14:8

                                                a. Recognize the enemy: 2 Corinthians 2:11, 1 Peter 5:8

                                                b. Prepare to fight: 1 Peter 3:15, 2 Timothy 2:15

                                6. Be well equipped:

a. God provides us with strength to fight this battle: Ephesians 6:10

b. We must use ALL of the armor God gives us: Ephesians 6:11-18

7. Get in the fight:

a. We will never win if we don’t begin: 1 Timothy 6:12, 1 Corinthians 10:3-5

B. With God on our side, we can be victorious!

               

Conclusion: In order to be a disciple of Jesus, we must be as an athlete and a soldier. Let us strive to live with the commitment needed to fight our battle victoriously.
